Company visit HMME “Atmosphaira” ITB to PT Garuda Indonesia

BANDUNG, meteo.itb.ac.id – The Meteorology Study Program at the Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) organized company visits to several firms relevant to the program’s curriculum, including PT MRT Jakarta, PT Garuda Indonesia, and PT Hidronav Tehnikatama. These visits took place on Thursday (23/11/2023).

The primary objective of these visits was to expose students to a broader scope of professional work and to enhance their understanding of the companies visited.

The first visit was to PT Garuda Indonesia, specifically the Garuda Indonesia Training Center (GITC). Students gained valuable insights into both meteorology and aviation. The session began with Captain Andhika Putra, Vice President of Learning and Development, sharing fascinating experiences from his tenure at GITC. Following this, Flight Dispatcher Oktadiansyah Ali Akbar provided further knowledge on the aviation industry and its relationship with meteorology. Topics ranged from an overview of aviation stakeholders and the mechanics of flight to the atmospheric layers and pressure conditions necessary for stable aircraft operation.

The visit went beyond mere presentations; students were given a tour of various sections of the GITC facility. One of the highlights was the Full Flight Simulator—a device used to train and test pilots to ensure their flying skills remain sharp. Students had the opportunity to attempt a simulated takeoff alongside Dita, a Senior Manager at GITC, allowing them to experience firsthand what it is like to operate an aircraft from the cockpit.

Subsequently, a visit to PT MRT Jakarta was conducted. Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta (MRTJ) is a rail-based rapid transit system serving the DKI Jakarta area. The visit, guided by Rachmy Fitriani, S.Si., M.Si.—a lecturer from the ITB Meteorology study program—proceeded very successfully. The students’ enthusiasm grew as they gained a wealth of interesting insights presented by PT MRT Jakarta.

After learning about the nature and development of the MRT system, the students were given a tour that covered everything from train components and maintenance services to the processes involved in repairing and refining the system. Beyond just exploring the internal facilities, the students also observed MRT operations firsthand, experiencing the entire process—from boarding the train to taking a ride on the provided service.

Teledyne Oceanscience Z-Boat

The final visit was to PT Hidronav Tehnikatama. Located in East Jakarta, this company operates within the survey industry, supplying equipment for land, marine, geophysical, oceanographic, hydrographic, and aerial surveys.

On this occasion, students gained valuable insights through a detailed overview of the equipment manufactured by PT Hidronav Tehnikatama. They were also given a tour of the industrial facility to view various instruments—ranging from Automatic Weather Stations and rain gauges to the Z-Boat used for aquatic surveys.

This company visit, organized by the Meteorology study program and the HMME “Atmosphaira” ITB provided the students with a wealth of knowledge. It is hoped that this experience will spark their interest in meteorology-related careers and inspire them to become high-achieving young professionals who contribute to the advancement of the nation’s technology.
