BANDUNG, meteo.itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) is renowned as one of Indonesia’s leading educational institutions. This year, two students from the ITB Meteorology Study Program—Alfiah Rizqi Ramdhini and Rubens Phenola Setiawan—earned the title of “Outstanding Student” at the study program level.
After passing the selection process at the study program level, they competed at the faculty level. Here, English proficiency proved to be a decisive factor. “At the faculty level, we had an edge over outstanding student candidates from other study programs. Meteorology students excel in English proficiency, demonstrating both fluency and articulateness,” said Rubens.
Alfiah noted that while she has a strong interest in non-academic pursuits, this did not cause her to neglect her primary responsibilities as a student.
“If we simply follow the standard curriculum expected of students, the basic outcome is essentially the same for everyone. However, if we can build experience and focus on other interests beyond our academic obligations, that creates added value,” Alfiah explained.
In contrast to Alfiah, Rubens focuses more deeply on academics. This is evidenced by his achievements, including a student exchange program at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

“In reality, being selected as an ‘Outstanding Student’ depends on many factors, as the title itself is merely a formal designation. However, in our daily lives, we must keep learning, never give up, and remain diligent, because opportunities are limitless and often arise unexpectedly,” said Rubens.
Their statements emphasize that academic success is not the sole indicator of achievement; engaging in diverse experiences and seizing opportunities is also crucial for personal development.
Rubens and Alfiah have demonstrated that through hard work and by making the most of every available opportunity, they can achieve remarkable success—both on and off campus. Their example serves as an inspiration for other students to persevere and actively seek out opportunities.
