Zephyrus ITB Holds Dissemination of Community Service Results for Technology-Based Flood Mitigation in Majalaya

MAJALAYA, meteo.itb.ac.id – BSO Zephyrus, as part of HMME “Atmosphaira” Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), organized the “Z-SHARE: Final Project BSO Zephyrus 2025” as the closing event of the 2025 community service work program series in the Majalaya area. The activity took place on Saturday (November 15, 2025), at SMA Negeri 2 Majalaya, Jl. Wangisagara, Bandung Regency.

This program was designed as a forum for reflection, dissemination of achievements, and public accountability regarding the implementation of community service activities carried out during the 2025 management period. The event was attended by 29 participants, comprising students from eight schools, representatives of the Jaga Balai Foundation, and representatives from six disaster-response communities in the Majalaya area.

The event began with a presentation on the background and objectives of the programs implemented during the 2025 management period. This was followed by a presentation of the results of the Z-ONA (Zephyrus – Observasi Nadir Air / Zephyrus – Water Level Observation) integration, covering the installation and maintenance of AWLR and ARR instruments to monitor river water levels and rainfall at three observation points: Ciharus, Cibangoak, and Sanding. The presentation also encompassed the utilization of zephyrusitb.com as a hydrometeorological monitoring data center, as well as the initial progress of WRF-Hydro-based flood prediction model development.

The Technology Demonstration session featured a hands-on practice of assembling a simple meteorological instrument based on ultrasonic sensors and a tipping bucket, allowing participants to directly observe how the components work in measuring hydrometeorological parameters such as rainfall and water level.

Through a live simulation, participants were able to observe how each component functions in measuring hydrometeorological parameters, such as rainfall and water level. This interactive method was designed so that the monitoring technology in use could be understood practically and accepted by the wider community, including students and disaster-response communities in the Majalaya area.

After the technical session, the agenda proceeded to the aspect of program sustainability through a Sustainability Dialogue with the Jaga Balai Foundation. This agenda focused on the planned handover of instrument management, including the preparation of an independent maintenance roadmap after the student mentorship period concludes. This commitment marks a strategic step toward the self-sufficiency of the Majalaya community in maintaining the functionality of the instruments as flood mitigation assets. Through this dialogue, the connection between the community-based monitoring system and the scientific approach of the university was strengthened, thereby better ensuring the sustainability of the program.

Positive responses also came from student participants. A Grade XI student of SMK Dharma Agung Paseh, Jajang, felt that the activity opened a new perspective on the importance of weather monitoring in daily life.

“Now, before leaving for school, I make it a habit to observe the weather and share it in the class group chat. This knowledge has become useful not only for me, but for others as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Grade XI student of SMAN 2 Majalaya, Najwa, acknowledged that the Z-SHARE activity helped her get to know meteorology from a closer and more applied perspective.

“The activity was very beneficial because I now know the types of clouds and can predict the weather. This also serves as a foundation if I wish to pursue my education in the Meteorology Study Program,” she said. She expressed hope that similar activities could continue to be developed with increasingly innovative content in the future.

Collaboration with the Jaga Balai Foundation became one of the strategic aspects of this program. The Secretary of the Jaga Balai Foundation 2024–2029, Jonathan, conveyed that the presence of BSO Zephyrus brought significant change to the way the community monitors weather conditions and flood risk.

“Before the collaboration with BSO Zephyrus, we monitored weather and water levels manually: measuring rainfall with a measuring cup, checking the river while standing in the rain. After the instruments and mentorship from Zephyrus came along, everything changed. Data can now be accessed from home via the internet. This transformation has truly helped us and the residents to prepare earlier when flood risk increases,” he explained.

This collaboration also engaged a network of local communities active in the fields of disaster response and community empowerment, namely the Jaga Balai Foundation, Rikat Tanggulun, Perintis Literasi, Sijagur Ibun, Siaga Warga Rancaekek, Saung Monteng, and PPA Marcapada. The presence of these cross-sectoral elements strengthens program continuity while ensuring that the use of the instruments remains relevant to real-world needs on the ground.

The event concluded with a group documentation session as a symbol of the completion of the Zephyrus work program for the 2025 management period. Although program implementation has come to an end, the technology and knowledge delivered through these activities are hoped to continue serving as a foundation for the Majalaya community in preserving the environment, understanding potential risks, and sustainably strengthening flood mitigation capacity, while also consolidating the foundation of knowledge-based collaboration between the university and the community
